James Finlayson, a Scotsman, founded a cotton
mill in Tampere in 1820. The weaving hall, where The Plevna
Brewery Pub & Restaurant is located today, was built in
1877, and the name Plevna dates back to this period.
In the Russo-Turkish War (1877-78) there were men from the Finlayson
cotton mills who fought alongside Russian troops, and since
the custom of the day was to name each new Finlayson building
after some significant current event, the weaving hall was named
after a battle fought in the Balkan town of Plevna during this
conflict. Therefore, it was more than appropriate for us to
call our pub Plevna.
Plevna is also linked with another historic event: in 1882,
the very first electric light bulbs in the Nordic countries
brought light to the Finlayson weaving hall, only three years
after Thomas Alva Edisons invention. |
